Hotspot Devices Available for Students
Without Internet Access
The DOE has a limited number of donated hotspot devices for schools to distribute to students who reside in NYCHA housing, shelters, or who do not have internet at home. Each device is equipped with 30GB of monthly data, with a two-year service plan. Each hotspot can connect up to eight devices.
Similar to the process for distributing DOE-issued iPads, schools are asked to identify and enter the number of hotspot devices they will need for their school community in the Remote Learning Device (RLD) report by November 21.
Once the student needs have been identified, the DOE will follow up with schools with further instructions. Please note that high school students who live in NYCHA housing, shelters, or who do not have internet at home are being prioritized.
If there are additional devices, the DOE will prioritize middle school students, followed by elementary school students, until all hotspot devices are distributed.
For more information on distributing hotspot devices, see the Hotspot Requests InfoHub page. For questions, email schooldevices@schools.nyc.gov, with “Hotspot Question” in the subject line.
EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, SCHOOLS WILL GO FULL REMOTE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
PLEASE VIEW PARENT COMMUNICATION BELOW.

HEALTH & SAFETY UPDATES
Dear M.S. 180 Community:
The health and safety of our students and staff and everyone in the DOE family across the city, is our top priority. We are committed to ensuring you have the information you need on COVID-19 as we continue to navigate this public health emergency together.
Today we are writing to inform you that one member of our school community has tested positive for COVID-19. At this time, this is the only confirmed case at the school. We are quickly taking all appropriate action and following rigorous protocols developed by the NYC Test + Trace Corps, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC Health), and the New York City Department of Education (DOE).
All students and teachers in the affected class(es) with the individual who tested positive are considered “close contacts,” and have been notified of the need to quarantine for 14 days since the last contact with the person who tested positive.
o These students and teachers will transition to fully remote teaching and learning for this period.
The NYC Test + Trace Corps and NYC Health will complete their investigation to identify and notify any other close contacts in the building, who will also need to quarantine for 14 days.
Anyone with a positive COVID-19 test will not return to the school and will be safely separated, until they are no longer infectious. In order to protect the privacy of the individual who has tested positive, we cannot share additional details about the case.
We will share physical and mental health and wellness resources for you and your child. COVID-19 can be stressful for you and your loved ones. It is natural to feel overwhelmed, sad, anxious and afraid. We want to ensure you can access helpful resources for coping and reducing stress.
While New Yorkers have done an outstanding job fighting the virus, leading to extremely low infection rates citywide, COVID-19 is still active in our city, state and our country.
Out of an abundance of caution, here is what will happen next to safeguard the health of our school community:
RESILIENCE * INTEGRITY * SCHOLARSHIP * EMPOWERMENT
There will be cases of COVID-19 this school year; we know this, and all of our protocols have been in service of fighting this virus. Our job is to swiftly and effectively handle any cases that appear and be transparent every step of the way. That is what we are doing today.
We know a lot more than we did in March about how to protect each other from the virus and it’s critical that we continue to act to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our schools. All of us must remember to follow these important “Core Four” actions to prevent COVID-19 transmission:
Stay home if sick: Monitor your and your child’s health and stay home if you are sick or keep them home if they are sick, except for getting essential medical care (including COVID-19 testing) and other essential needs.
Physical distancing: Stay at least 6 feet away from people who are not members of your household.
Wear a face covering: Protect those around you. Wearing a face covering helps reduce the spread of COVID-19, especially if you are sick and don’t have symptoms. For more information about face coverings, visit nyc.gov/health/coronavirus and look for "FAQ About Face Coverings."
Practice healthy hand hygiene: Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available; clean frequently touched surfaces regularly; avoid touching your face with unwashed hands; and cover your cough or sneeze with your arm, not your hands.
We will continue to closely follow directions from public health experts and proactively update you on any measures we are taking.
Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions. For additional information on COVID-19, visit schools.nyc.gov/coronavirus or call 311. Finally, to ensure we can rapidly reach you via text and email, please set up a New York City Schools Account (NYCSA) as soon as possible by visiting schools.nyc.gov/nycsa.
Thank you for your cooperation. Health and safety will always come first in New York City public schools, no matter what.
Sincerely,
Marlon P. Williams Principal

Back-to-School Reminders & Resources
New Resource for Students in Temporary Housing:
• Did you know that MetroCard’s for parents in temporary housing are now available at schools?
• Did you know that enrollment staff can help families remotely while the Family Welcome Centers are closed?
• Did you know that parents can get busing information online through their NYC Schools Account?
For information about this and much more (devices and internet connectivity, shelter transfers, early childhood, translation and interpretation services, school meals, contact information for your STH team and Regional Manager) check out this NEW one-pager from NYS-TEACHS: Back-to-School Resources for Students in Temporary Housing. Make sure to download a PDF of the resource to share with parents and your colleagues!
Checking in with Families in Temporary Housing: We encourage you to check-in with parents whose children are McKinney-Vento eligible (or youth themselves in the case of unaccompanied homeless youth) at the start of each school year to determine whether their housing situation has changed and help make appropriate arrangements for the Fall. For strategies on how to check in with students and families in temporary housing at this time, take a look at out our revised Check-In Checklist: Connecting with Families During COVID-19 Remote and Hybrid Instruction.
From Schoolhouse Connection - Signs of Potential Homelessness in a Virtual Learning World: With hybrid and remote instruction, identifying students experiencing homelessness will require revisions to typical techniques. Check out this one-pager on the signs of potential homelessness during remote instruction.
Learning Bridges Free Childcare Program: Learning Bridges is a new program that will provide free childcare options for children from 3-K through 8th grade on days then they are scheduled for remote learning. This program will provide opportunities for children to connect to their remote learning activities while including time for art, recreation, and other age-appropriate activities. Please forward the application information to families in temporary housing, as their applications will be given priority.
Scholarship Opportunity
Do you know any youth who have experienced homelessness, were born on or after October 1, 2000, and plan to attend college for the first time in the fall of 2021?
Please invite them to apply for the SchoolhouseConnection Youth Leadership & Scholarship Program. The scholarship award is $2,000, plus other benefits. Applications are open now, and the deadline is October 1, 2020.
Schoolhouse Connection's Public Service Announcements
From SchoolHouse Connection: To help inform families and youth about their educational rights, check out these two public service announcements (PSA) aimed at reaching families in temporary housing, educators, community organizations, and local leaders.
Check out Schoolhouse Connection's public service announcements here!
Homelessness Prevention
Many families in unstable housing situations risk losing their housing during the COVID-19 pandemic. If one of your student's housing is at risk, you can refer their families to Homebase. Homebase can help families remain in their communities and avoid entering the shelter system.
To connect a family with Homebase, call 311 or refer them to their local Homebase program using the Homebase
